What Parents Should Know About Drug Prevention/Treatment?

INTRODUCTION

In the last years, we have witnessed significant increases in the use of drugs, such as tobacco, inhalants, and marijuana, by young people.  At the same time, perception among them that drug use is illegal, dangerous and wrong has declined dramatically.

Talking to children about drugs can be an uncomfortable idea for parents, especially if they are not prepared and informed.

But you have to do it because, if you don’t talk to them about it, someone else will.  Your kids will be told many inaccurate things about drugs.  They will be bombarded with mixed messages whether it’s through movies, music, videos, advertisements or peer pressure.

They will hear things like: “Everybody is doing it.”   “It can’t hurt you.”  “I been doing it for years and nothing ever happened to me.”

The more you know the more your child will believe what you have to say.  Here is a basic information you should know, to prevent first and, ways to help to cope if drugs have come into your family.
